India’s census figures show the country’s population has reached 7.3 million.
It is the highest since the 1990s and the biggest increase since the mid-1990s.
In a release, the data provider said the increase is due to an increase in births, deaths and migration.
In its most recent update, it said the number of people living in the country rose by 4.7% in 2016-17 to 2.7 billion.
Data collected by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) shows that India’s urban population has grown by 1.4 million.
The census bureau says the number in rural areas has increased by 1% and the number outside the urban core has increased, by 3%.
The population in urban areas is now around 1.6 million.
